What's the Difference Between a Mortgage and a Promissory Note?

Most people taking out a loan to purchase a property will sign two important documents: a Note and a Mortgage. Most of us think of the Mortgage as the loan but the Mortgage is really just the security (collateral) for the loan allowing the lender the right to sell the property through a foreclosure. The Note, often referred to as a "promissory note," is a separate document that creates the underlying loan obligation or the borrower's promise to repay the loan.
